The Ondo State Police Command announced on Saturday that a man, named as Sunday, had been arrested in connection with the death of an 80-year-old woman in the state.
The octogenarian’s body was discovered inside her farm in the Costain axis of the local government, amid suspicions that she had been raped before her assailants murdered her.
The dead had been declared missing since last Wednesday, when she failed to come home after leaving her farm.
According to the Daily Post, community members claimed that the victim was raped to death, especially given the circumstances surrounding her death.
One of the sources mentioned that there had been recent rapes in the town.
She claimed that this had discouraged the majority of the women in the neighborhood from traveling to the farm alone.
According to the source, a suspect, Sunday, who is a well-known palm wine tapper in the village, was apprehended by some youngsters when the deceased old woman’s phone was discovered on him.
During interrogation, the suspect was stated to have confessed that the deceased was allegedly attacked and killed by suspected herders.
However, the suspect has been turned over to Costain police for further investigation.
Mrs Funmilayo Odunlami, the State Police Public Relations Officer, verified the event and said the subject was currently in police custody.
“Yes, I can confirm that the suspect is in our custody and that he will be charged.”
