Prof. Attahiru Jega, former Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), has urged the Federal Government to either continue mandating participation in the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) scheme or make it voluntary.
Jega made the appeal while speaking at the Opening Ceremony of the NYSC’s 50th Anniversary Celebration on Monday in Abuja, where he was a guest speaker.
He went on to say that the service must be kept, but it must also be repositioned to have a significant impact on national growth, or it would not last another ten decades.
“If Nigeria wants to make mandatory youth service for all graduates, it must provide the resources to do so.” If not, you might as wellIt should be elective or specialized so that you get the most out of your limited resources.
“We must keep this service, but we must reposition it so that it can provide not only value for money, but also have an even greater impact on national progress and development, or it will not last the next ten decades,” he stated.
