In order to remove the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) from power in the March 18 governorship election, the Coalition of South East Youth Leaders (COSEYL) has urged all Rivers State citizens to vote. Nyesom Wike, the incumbent governor, is deemed unreliable.
The coalition claimed that the current government supported the rigging of the recently held presidential election in a statement released on Friday by its President-General, Goodluck Ibem.
Online stories about how Labour Party votes were rigged and counted for the All Progressives Congress, APC, were popular.
Igbo residents in the state, according to COSEYL, have been pressured to vote for PDP or shut down their businesses.
The coalition asserts that nobody has the authority to threaten or intimidate others into not casting their vote for their preferred candidates.
“We want all Igbos in Rivers State to understand that Wike’s call for a meeting to threaten them with voting PDP or else he will declare their properties abandoned property demonstrates that he is scared and afraid of their votes, which will send him to prison if his PDP governorship candidate, who he wants to cover his looting spree, loses in the elections.
We implore all residents of Rivers to vote for the candidates of their choosing and to disregard any threats from Wike and his gangs.
