Edo State’s governor, Godwin Obaseki, has urged the locals to accept the outmoded money.
Obaseki appealed the Supreme Court’s decision that the old N500 and N1000 notes would remain legal tender through December 31, 2023.
The Edo State Government is one of the state governments that is a co-defendant with the federal government against Kaduna and some other state governments (CBN), and the Central Bank of Nigeria set a deadline of February 10 for old naira notes.
Obaseki, however, stated that the old notes should be accepted alongside the new ones to facilitate trade and stimulate economic activity in a statement made on Thursday, March 9. The statement was made by the Commissioner for Communication and Orientation, Chris Nehikhare.
He stated:.
The Supreme Court’s ruling put an end to the debate over the circulation of the notes, and now everyone is urged to accept and use the notes for trade.
“Since all concerns regarding the availability of cash are handled by the relevant government agencies, we are also investigating alternative means of transaction, including electronic transfers, among others. “.
