Taraba LP Suspends Chairman for Alleged N21 Million Fraud, Among Others

The Taraba State chapter of the Labour Party (LP) suspended its chairman shortly after the national leadership of the LP fired the acting national publicity secretary and dissolved the executives of the Ogun state chapter.

Esther Gulum, the party’s chair, received a no-confidence vote from Taraba’s executive council Wednesday for allegedly diverting N21 million in campaign funds.

Gulum’s six-month suspension, according to Peter Philip, became necessary to allow the party’s leadership to investigate the claim.

Gulum was accused of administering the party operations alone with her personal family members, in addition to the alleged misuse of funds.

According to Philip, the party’s executive took action against her because she used personal accounts to run the party’s activities in the state.

She was also accused of engaging in anti-party actions and working for the state administration after advancing to the party’s leadership post in the state.

“Lack of accountability and transparency in the conduct of the party’s business in the state,” they claimed, was the norm of the day.

Gulum, on the other hand, claimed to be innocent of the allegations leveled against her.

While acknowledging that N17 million was approved for the demonstration, she claimed that N9 million was released to her for the event, which she had accounted for to the executive.

She stated:

“It is childish and incorrect to imply that I was handed N20 million by Peter Obi’s campaign council and I embezzled it. I was not given N20 million; I was given N9 million, which I handled wisely and with a clean record.”

According to her, the charges against her could be the product of a young leader desperate for money who wants to tarnish her good name and image.

“It is also untrue to claim that I operate the party office with my own family and that I am anti-party. I would like the national secretariat and all supporters of our party to dismiss the information because it is completely false and aimed at ruining my and my family’s good reputation. “I am a devoted member of the party, and I am obedient,” she continued.
