I don’t understand why Nigeria can’t defeat Boko Haram, says Atiku

Atiku Abubakar, the Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP) presidential candidate, has claimed he is perplexed by Nigeria’s inability to fight Boko Haram.

Speaking on Sunday at “The People’s Townhall” hosted by Channels Television, the presidential hopeful said he did not understand why Nigeria should continue be dealing with the Boko Haram problem.

“I worked as a customs officer in Borno state, patrolling the entire north-east. I am therefore extremely familiar with the vegetation and the border regions. In the Borno region, I still haven’t found a spot where somebody can hide and not be noticed,” he claimed.

I genuinely have no idea how Boko Haram got started. Where is the hiding place? They went so far as to mention a location called Sambisa. I was there, but I failed to notice a forest. There are only scattered shrubs there.

“We have used the Nigerian military, which used to be among the best in the world, and they have performed admirably in a number of international settings. And despite using all of the Nigerian Army’s power, we were unable to defeat Boko Haram.

“I’m perplexed. Maybe I’ll understand when I arrive there.

Abubakar said there is a need for reform when asked how he would enhance security and made reference to the security framework of the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

I’ve traveled to many different places in the world. The UAE security architecture is one of the security structures I admire. The main foundation is surveillance,” he declared.

“In the UAE, you won’t see any troops or uniformed police officers. But eventually, everyone is constantly being watched, especially if you’re a tourist.

“You are being observed both when you enter and leave the nation. In terms of security, that is the application of technology.

“We must examine the current security setup. How can we change it to provide individuals with the safest environment possible, no matter where they are?
