Kingsley Etim Eyo, who is 34 years old, stole his cousin Goodnews Essien, who is six years old. On Monday, the Akwa Ibom State High Court in Okoita, Ibiono Ibom Local Government Area, gave him a 10-year prison sentence.
It was found that Eyo, a resident of Ikot Otoinyie in the Uruan Local Government Area, and a friend worked together to kidnap and sell the boy in 2018. The child, who is six, has not been found until today.
Justice Okon Okon, who was in charge of the case, said that the convict took the victim from his mother when she sent him to Ikot Otoinyie Village, Uruan, to buy garri.
Before the full trial, the person on trial pleaded not guilty to the charge, which led to the full trial. Three witnesses were called by the prosecution team from the State Ministry of Justice, led by Barrister Comfort Udo, an assistant director of prosecution.
The prosecution also gave four pieces of evidence, such as the Police Investigation Report from September 20, 2018, and the convict’s confessional statements, in which he said that his share of the money from selling the child was N80,000.
“The money we got from selling Good News is with Joshua,” said part of the confessional statement. N80,000 is my share of that money. Yes, Denis Joshua went to a native doctor named Cletus from the village of Ikot Akpa Ekong in the Uruan Local Government Area to hide it.
Justice Okon said in his ruling, “I have carefully read and thought about all of the defendant’s extrajudicial statements and compared them with the evidence of prosecution witnesses. I can conclude that the defendant worked closely with his friends and accomplices to steal Goodnews Kufre Essien from his mother, the PW1.
“I also thought about how the defendant was related to PW1 (his aunt) and the child victim in this case. The defendant hurt his close relationship with PW1 and her kidnapped child, who calls him “Uncle,” by betraying and hurting them.
“The prosecution has proven beyond a reasonable doubt that the defendant is guilty of child abduction as charged,” the judge said. “I find the defendant guilty.” Kingsley Etim Eyo, the defendant, has been given a 10-year prison sentence.”
