The DSS will look into claims that its agents are begging at Lagos Airport

The Department of State Services (DSS) says it will look into claims that its agents behaved badly at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos State (MMIA).

A human rights lawyer in Abuja named Pelumi Olajengbesi said that agents of the agency beg for money from airport travelers. This led to an investigation into the claims.

He said it on Facebook;

“It’s embarrassing for the whole country that DSS officers have to check out people who are begging for money at the Lagos airport.

“It’s normal for Immigration and Customs officers to do this, so it’s easy to forgive them. However, it’s shocking that a very important agency like the DSS would do this.”

In response to the claim, DSS spokesman Peter Afunanya said in a statement on November 8:

“Someone named Pelumi Olajengbesi told the Department of State Services (DSS) that Service employees at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) in Lagos do things that aren’t very professional.

“Because of this, the Service has started a full investigation into what happened. It also asks Olajengbesi and any other member of the public with proof of this to come forward to the Service so that the right steps can be taken.”
