Nyesom Wike, the governor of Rivers State, has asked politicians not to say anything stupid about religion during the 2023 general election campaigns.
Kelvin Ebiri, the governor’s special assistant for media, said that Wike spoke on Thursday in Port Harcourt, the state capital, when he met with Okon Effiong, the new Rivers police commissioner.
He said that it is important for every government to protect its citizens’ lives and property, and that if they don’t, it means they have failed.
“We think we owe this country something, and we need to stop this religion-based politics so that we don’t start a war or a fight. “Go tell people what you can do and what we can do for them,” he told her.
“I don’t think there can be good government if people and things aren’t safe. When there is danger everywhere, no one can talk about good government.
“If you can’t protect your citizens, you shouldn’t talk about government. If you build roads, people have to be alive to use them. If you want to build a good school, you need people to go to it.
“So, it is very important that you protect the lives and property of your people. So, as a government, that is the only reason we are in power.”
