Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, the presidential candidate for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has said again that he will sell Nigeria’s refineries to businessmen if he is elected president.
Atiku said that letting business people run the country’s refineries would make them run better. During an interview with Voice of America’s Hausa Service in Washington, DC, he said this.
When asked about the refineries, Atiku said, “My position on this isn’t new. I’ve said for years that I’ll sell them because businesspeople will run them better if you give them to them.”
The PDP candidate for president also said he would do something about oil theft in the south of the country.
Atiku promised that if he becomes Nigeria’s next president, he would use the “power of government” to stop oil theft in the South-South.
“This is a different problem, and we need to figure out how we can use government power to stop it. The NNPC and the security agencies whose job it is to watch over oil pipelines must work together,” he said.
Nigeria has three oil refineries. They are in Kaduna, Warri, and Port Harcourt.
