Politicians don’t follow through on the promises they make during their campaigns, according to Attahiru Jega, a former INEC chairman.
He made this statement on Monday during a gathering that the National Institute for Legislative and Democratic Studies (NILDS) and the Kukah Center jointly organized.
High-Level Forum on Political Communication and Issue-based Campaign in the 2023 General Elections was the event’s theme.
Since elections were held every four years, he added, “the substance of governance has been on a trajectory of lousy governance and nearly all socio-economic indices point to that in terms of the core needs of people.
“Our politicians have been steering this nation away from that need of serving the needs and ambitions of the people by the way they prepare their campaigns and the way they govern after they are in office.”
Jega claimed that in order to elect the best leaders, Nigerians must start considering their proper role in the electoral process.
