He needs to step up – Souness criticizes one Chelsea star after latest defeat

Former Liverpool star, Graeme Souness, has criticized Chelsea defender Kalidou Koulibaly following the Blues Premier League 3-0 defeat to Leeds United on Sunday.

Souness said that Koulibaly, who received a red card against Leeds United, needs to step up his performance for Chelsea.

He also holds the Senegal international responsible for the last-gasp Harry Kane equalizer for Tottenham last week, adding that the centre-back is struggling to adapt to the intensity of the Premier League compared to Serie A.

Koulibaly joined Chelsea from Serie A side Napoli this summer in a £33million deal.

Speaking to talkSPORT, Souness said, “I know it’s only early, but I saw something in Koulibaly last week when Kane scored the equalizer.

“There were three Spurs players who could have scored that goal. That’s why you have Koulibaly in the mix, putting his head on it or knocking players out of the way.

“I’m looking at him now and I’m thinking, ‘You’re 31 – I thought you were this big, strong, aggressive player who would attack everything in our box?’

“He didn’t do it again yesterday. I would be saying to him, ‘This is why we got you!’

“I’m not saying this has happened to him… but when you get older than 30, you start to question whether that challenge is for you anymore.

“He has to realize he is playing in the Premier League. He will have to rise to that challenge.”
