Peter Obi, the presidential candidate for the Labour Party in Nigeria, has been urged to wait before running for office by Dino Melaye, a former senator from Kogi West.
On Friday, July 1, 2022, Melaye posted a video clip to his Facebook page that contained his request.
The former congressman agreed that Obi was a quality product, but asserted that the time was not appropriate for him to pursue his presidential aspiration. He added that Atiku Abubakar, the PDP’s presidential candidate, would be a better choice.
He stated:
“By God’s grace, Obi has the capacity to serve as president in the near future. I honor you and your efforts to create a new Nigeria. Although I am happy for you, I must tell you that this is not the right moment for you. You must wait for your opportunity.
“I’ve listened to your hypotheses, defenses, speeches, and campaigns, and I can tell that 90% of them center on lowering the cost of governing.
“You are a fantastic Nigerian, and I commend your cunning on the political and intellectual fronts. You are one Nigerian that I am certain will have a spot for you tomorrow. But let’s put the social media drama and Diaspora joy aside for the time being.
The reality is that we require a unifier and a Nigerian who is capable of resolving the issue of insecurity and who will have access to intelligence from every aspect of our country’s security. We require a Nigerian who can gather intelligence from Cameroon, Mali, Chad, the Benin Republic, and other nations.
That Nigerian, according to Melaye, is Atiku Abubakar. “We need a Nigerian who has that capacity to address the problem of Boko Haram, bandits, and others because he has info from all the neighboring countries,” he stated.
