One of the Boko Haram commanders at the Gazuwa camp, Amir Abbah, was forced to marry a schoolgirl from Borno State named Hauwa Joseph. He was later killed in a fight with Nigerian Army soldiers.

On June 12, the Nigerian Army attacked the Boko Haram camp in Gazuwa in a big way. Hauwa was able to get away.

She told reporters about this at a news conference in Maiduguri, Borno State, at the Command and Control Centre, Maimalari Cantonment. She said that terrorists in the camp were trying to get away as troops were coming closer, but she took a different path to get out of the terrorists’ camp.

She said, “On my way, I ran into some insurgents who asked me where I was going. I told them I was following some women who were hiding in a nearby forest.

“I slept with my child under a tree, and the next day I walked until I reached a road where there was a military checkpoint.

“At first, they thought I was going to blow myself up, but when I told them who I was, they took me with them.”

She was glad that the Nigerian Army saved her and hoped that other girls still in terrorist camps would also be saved.

Remember that Hauwa Joseph was one of more than 200 girls from the Government Girls Secondary School in Chibok, Borno State, who were taken by Boko Haram terrorists in April 2014.

Seven years after the girls were taken, about 100 of them are still missing.
