Blessing Okoro, a well-known Nigerian relationship expert, has resorted to social media to warn parents against lying to their children about some topics, claiming that these children can discover the truth through the internet and never trust their parents again.
Many African parents, according to Blessing, use lies to force their children to refrain from doing certain activities.
She went on to say that once these children reach adulthood and discover the reality, they prefer to dismiss their parents’ remarks as jokes rather than facts, even when they are telling the truth.
“What’s strange about African parenting is that they lie to their children. Simply because your parents want you to refrain from doing anything, they will lie about it, and when we kids understand it was all a lie, our parents’ words become a joke.
Now you see why we don’t listen to our parents but rather strangers… Parents give the truth to their children and teach them consequences rather than merely abstinence.”
